Hero Dog Awards - Dayo

Dublin, California

Dayo is a 7 yr old Rhodesian Ridgeback. Dayo is a therapy dog with Valley Humane Society (VHS) since May 2018. Dayo and I visit at George Mark Children’s House in San Leandro, CA. George Mark Children’s House was the first freestanding pediatric palliative care center in the US. We love visiting the patients and families there. Dayo always brings comfort and smiles to the patients, nurses and staff.
We also visit adults with disabilities at Futures Explored and Sunflower Hill. Dayo gets treats from the clients and also provides companionship. He always makes them smile. Sometimes a client will be having a tough time and Dayo will have them smiling by the end of the visit.
We also visit children at the Pleasanton Library and local libraries for Paws to Read sessions. The children love to read to Dayo and pet him.
During the school year, we visit high schools to provide stress relief to the students for finals. He helps educate the kids about how to pet dogs, be kind and compassionate to others at Critter Camps and Girl Scout events at VHS.
Dayo was also a companion dog and best friend to a cheetah named Pancake at Wildlife Safari a safari park in Winston, OR.
Dayo deserves the title of American Hero Dog because he makes everyone happy that he visits with throughout the community. Dayo lives up to the meaning of his name “joy arrives” on all of his pet therapy visits.
