Hero Dog Awards - Bentley

Locke, New York

On September 11, 2019, I was on my way to work when I saw a dog lying on the side of the road. I quickly pulled over…the dog got up very slowly and I figured he was old because he looked in pain. But then I noticed his rear right leg-it had been shattered and just dangled there. I loaded him into my car and back to the house. He wagged his tail and actually climbed the stairs of our porch to greet my husband. I brought him to the local vet where he waited to be claimed. No one claimed him. They decided to amputate his leg because the injury was so bad. He went to the shelter to heal. We visited him as often as we could and ended up adopting him! We quickly found out how bonded he was with my husband, a wounded veteran. He actually started to alarm us when my husband’s sugar levels would drop (he is diabetic). We started to train him as a therapy dog but he had a hard time on slippery floors since he only had three legs. So Bentley now lives happily with is as an unofficial therapy dog who doesn’t even realize he is different. He is resilient, happy, and loving. Definitely a hero dog that has overcome terrible odds!
