Simon is a medical alert service dog. He is my knight in shinning armor and I honestly don’t know what I would do without him. But he has not had the easiest journey. He was a rescue from Big Dog Rescue project and I adopted him in March of 2021. He was 11 months old. I began training him not long after and he progressed immensely. However on October 12th, 2021 he was shot in the chest by a BB gun in our backyard. The doctors were able to extract it but shrapnel was left in him. After that we began picking up the pieces and trying to go about our lives and trying not to live in fear of it happening again. He continued working even though this traumatic event had occurred.
Unfortunately that wasn’t the end as on December 14th he was shot again in the leg by a BB gun. That morning he continued to work even though he had a bullet in his leg. Once we realized he was shot we rushed him to the vet where they confirmed he had been shot once again. Somehow against all odds he continues to perform his service work everyday and he continues to surpass my expectations. Regardless of his circumstances he still loves life and he is still is able to find joy in everything he does. I don’t know what I did to deserve a dog as special as he but what I do know is that he is what makes my world complete and that this does not define us. He has taught me that what happened yesterday shouldn’t affect what we do today.
