Hero Dog Awards - Skip

Tucson, Arizona

Skip is a nationally certified explosive detection police canine who serves alongside his partner and handler, Officer Lauren Connell a 14-year veteran of the University of Arizona Police Department. Skip is a 4-year-old Chocolate Labrador Retriever, who was obtained through a grant from the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Foundation. Skip is an integral part of every special event the department is involved with. Skip and Officer Connell work in conjunction with many other Southern Arizona law enforcement agencies to maintain the great working relationship we have with our neighboring agencies. Skip has been involved with locating firearms involved in homicides and locating ammunition used in shootings. Skip has supported dignitary events for the Governor of Arizona and Vice President of the United States. The explosion detection capability Skip provides at special events is an absolute necessity to promote a safe event for all that attend. Examples of these events include NCAA football and basketball games, bowl games, festivals, concerts, public demonstrations, and dignitary events. Skip and Officer Connell are responsible for protecting over fifty thousand people at any given time. On Skip’s off time he enjoys lounging on the couch with his humans, taking walks, and playing with his dog sister!
